The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

  • The CEFR is the international standard for describing language ability
  • It has six levels starting at A1 (basic) through to C2 (expert)
  • It describes what learners can do at each level of learning a language
  • It covers all four key language skills: reading , writing, speaking and listening
  • Cambridge Assessment English has been continuously involved in the research and development of the CEFR
  • Each Cambridge English Qualification targets a particular level of the CEFR and provides a clear focus for study programmes
